Rusted ore hoppers, collapsed adits, and weathered mining equipment line the desert floor, a reminder of an era that built — and abandoned — towns overnight. Beyond Yellow Cat lies a 12-mile straightaway across open desert before the route ascends the Book Cliffs. The terrain turns dry and blindingly dusty, a fine powder that hangs in the air for miles. Every ridge reveals more of Utah’s layered geology — Entrada sandstone, Mancos shale, and the hard edges of canyon country. We pass through Sego Ghost Town, explore the historic Sego Canyon Petroglyphs, and follow winding dirt tracks toward Green River, ending the day camped near Big Hole Wash. Utah BDR Day 5 – From Porcupine Rim to the Colorado River | Kokopelli Trail & Onion Creek Canyon This episode continues our Utah Backcountry Discovery Route series, following the trail east from Moab through Porcupine Rim, Kokopelli Trail, and Onion Creek Canyon — ending the day at Dewey Bridge, where the Dolores River meets the Colorado. We start with big mesa views above Castle Valley, descend through the Kokopelli’s rutted sandstone tracks, stop at Bull Canyon to see dinosaur footprints in the Entrada Formation, and then drop more than 4,000 feet toward the river. The drive through Onion Creek brings over 20 creek crossings between red and purple canyon walls before joining Highway 128 for a short run north along the Colorado. Welcome back to the Utah Backcountry Discovery Route (BDR) — Day 5 takes us deep into Moab, Utah, to tackle one of the most famous off-road trails in the world: Hell’s Revenge. We start at the Sand Flats Recreation Area, climb the first slickrock ridge, traverse rolling domes, and make our way through the twisting maze of petrified sand that defines this iconic terrain. While our rigs were loaded for the long haul and a bit top-heavy, we still experienced the heart of Hell’s Revenge — the climbs, the exposure, and the landscape that makes Moab legendary. The obstacles we skipped this time — Hell’s Gate, the Hot Tubs, the Escalator — will have to wait for a future run. Utah BDR Day 3 Segment 2 — Elk Mountain to Lockhart Basin Our Utah Backcountry Discovery Route adventure continues high in the Abajo Mountains, waking up to cool air and the sound of wind through the pines at Elk Mountain. From the top, the views stretch out for miles, across canyon country that we’ll spend the next several days exploring. Descending from the pass, we drop into Monticello, Utah, for fuel and supplies before heading west toward Indian Creek Canyon. Along the way, we stop at Newspaper Rock, where thousands of years of stories are carved into the sandstone — hunters, bighorn, spirals, and symbols from the Ancestral Puebloan people who once traveled this same route. By midafternoon, we turn off the pavement and onto Lockhart Basin Road, the start of the BDR’s advanced route. The road winds through sandstone domes, past Hamburger Rock, and across Indian Creek, before climbing into the vast red landscape that parallels Canyonlands National Park. We cross into southern Utah, setting camp beneath the towering buttes of Valley of the Gods, before taking on one of the most iconic climbs in the Southwest — the Moki Dugway — three miles of steep dirt switchbacks carved into the cliffs of Cedar Mesa. At the top, we trace the route of the Emigrant Trail, also known as the Snow Flat Road, the same corridor once followed by the Hole-in-the-Rock pioneers in 1880. From the slickrock of The Twist to the scenic drive along Butler Wash, we explore ancient history carved into stone at the Wolfman Petroglyphs and Butler Wash Ruins. In February 2025 I joined the OffRoad Overland Camping crew and Ron Channels for a run through Eastern Nevada. The plan was straightforward: explore old mines, ghost towns, and the kind of remote desert backcountry where you don’t see another soul for hours. We met up north of Las Vegas along the Great Basin Highway. It’s one of those stretches of road that feels like it could go on forever — desert floor on either side, mountain ranges in the distance, and not much else. Everyone in the group had their rigs fueled, radios checked, and gear strapped down. Out here, the towns are few and far between, and once you leave pavement you’re on your own. Eastern Nevada doesn’t ease you in. It’s wide-open country, dry and rugged, where the old mining roads cut through terrain that hasn’t changed much since the 1800s.
